Course Objectives:

    • Provide a background and framework of the development of the Micro Agri Product
    • Equip participants with a thorough understanding of existing practices in agricultural lending
    • Provide participants with tools to develop, pilot, implement and improve a Micro Agri Product while integrating best practices from The MABS Approach to Microfinance

Features:

The MABS Program developed and tested a Micro-Agri Loan Product incorporating best practices from the MABS approach to microfinance. Features include:

    • Incorporating sources of income other than farm income, in eligibility requirements
    • Character first and cash flow second, to help determine whether to lend to an applicant
    • Weekly, semi-monthly or monthly payment installments, rather than lump sum payment
    • Innovative guarantees vs. hard collateral
    • Small first loans packaged on what a business and household cash flow can withstand
    • Subsequent loans are contingent on past repayment behavior and present repayment capacity
    • Voluntary, rather than compulsory, savings
