Strategic Planning

Strategic planning is a review of the bank’s mission, strategies and previous performance. Strategic planning sets the future direction of the bank and as such, is typically a review of the entire bank’s operations. For a bank with microfinance activities, strategic planning can be useful to analyze the bank’s microfinance operations vis-à-vis other bank products and services. Strategic planning can inform decisions on how and on what basis to expand microfinance operations.

The Strategic Handbook below, developed by MABS Technical Staff and applied with successful results in a number of banks, provides guidelines and resources to plan and implement an effective strategic planning activity.

  • Pre-Planning Tools help gather the necessary data to review and analyze performance
  • Workshop Tools provide templates to facilitate strategic planning meetings
  • Sample outputs are examples of the resources a strategic planning exercise can produce
