Training and technical assistance on the MABS Approach can be accessed by banks through a variety of different methods.
(1) MABS Approach Training and Technical Services (MATTS): A ToolKit for Banks
The ToolKit, organized in a series of DVDs, is a standardized series of training modules and technical resources including product and procedural manuals, templates and tools to assist banks in planning, piloting and expanding microfinance operations.
Course Descriptions and session guides for all modules and courses provide a rationale for the course, the target audience, visual presentations to assist with internal seminars, and tools and templates to provide internally.
Using the ToolKit is the first step to incorporating MABS Approach best practices in the bank’s microfinance operations.
(2) MABS Service Providers (MSPs)
Establishing policies and procedures for microfinance operations is a challenging task that requires commitment from different levels of management and understanding and compliance among staff. To facilitate decision-making and education for staff, it may be useful to have in-person counsel and technical assistance.
To accommodate this need, MABS and the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines selected, trained and certified two consulting firms to deliver The MABS Approach Training and Technical Services. These consulting firms are equipped with the knowledge and experience to assist banks in reviewing microfinance operations and applying the MABS Approach to bank practices.
Interested banks engage MABS Service Providers directly to begin a program of training and technical assistance. Contact information is provided below.

To make a decision to start microfinance operations, expand the bank’s existing portfolio or to introduce
a new product or alter an existing practice – it is often useful to see first-hand how another bank
approached a similar decision.
Learning Centers are MABS participating banks that have been trained to serve as a host to other financial institutions that are interested in gaining exposure to microfinance operations and the experience of a
bank in applying the MABS Approach.
To develop a bank’s capacity to provide training for its own staff, MABS developed the MABS Technical
Resources Specialists Accreditation (MABSTeRS) Program.
The MABSTeRS Accreditation Program selects and trains experienced microfinance managers and staff
of MABS participating banks to deliver the content of the MABS Account Officers Training Course. Upon completion the course, participants are certified as MABSTeRS and are provided with resources to facilitate trainings within their bank.
The MABSTeRS training materials are included in this section as a resource for banks to develop an
internal training unit.
Distance Learning ProgramWith over 1,000 account officers, supervisors and branch managers at MABS participating banks,
providing quality, in-person training and technical assistance on microfinance best practices is a challenge.
In 2007, MABS is developing a computer-based, on-line Distance Learning Program. The course,
targeted to new and existing bank staff and facilitated by trained technical facilitators, will feature
interactive courses on the core elements of the MABS Approach through a series of on-line lectures,
exercises and quizzes to test comprehension.
